A BIG THANKS to all who participated in the Willow Garden Tour 2024 in one way or another, whether you prepared your gardens, mowed your grass, worked behind the scenes, or simply spent a glorious day visiting the properties.

We need your help, please. This message came from one who was on the tour:

Ring lost on Willow Garden Tour. It’s likely on the road near Cheria Jerue’s garden.  The ring is wide silver with a Tlingit Raven design.  Please DM Barrie Blackman-Green if found.  Thank you!

If you have difficulty with doing a direct message, please send an email to carolgoltz@gmail.com and I will be happy to help connect you with the owner of the ring. Thank you!

Willow Garden Tour July 20, 2024 Gardens

Karen Mattson has lived in Alaska since 1968, painting Alaskan scenes, florals and still life in watercolor, oils and acrylics. In addition to her art she loves to spend time in her large perennial garden where she has plants from as far away as the Himalayan Mountains. Karen is a past President of the Willow Garden Club, a Master Gardener and we are excited to have her garden on the 2024 Tour. Karen is hosting the lunch stop from 11 am to 1 pm.  Bring your own lunch, a chair or blanket to spread on the lawn.  All other gardens will be open during the lunch break.

Directions —28466 George Parks Highway. Turn off the Parks Highway onto Buckingham Palace, turn right past Hatcher Pass Polaris.  Go to the end of the dirt road where it turns left into the driveway.

Cheria Jerue and her husband are in their third summer at this location but the hanging baskets, large fenced lawn and long border planting are well established and immaculate.  Cheria starts annuals from seed to mix with perennials, for her hanging baskets and vegetable starts. The site has a remarkable come back past. The home was built in 2017 after the original structure was destroyed in the 2015 Sockeye Wildfire.

Jeanine Anderson has a large work-in-progress yard and garden with two hefty rock terraces leading down to Long Lake. Loads of lovely annuals in baskets frame the entry of the new home replaced after a devastating fire. This lovely lake-front home will be back next year so see what this eager gardener has done on her work-in-progress landscaping.

Directions — 11105 N. Lakes-O-the-Su Drive. Long Lake Road /Crystal Lake Road to Lakes-O-the-Su Drive.

Vicky Stephens has created a vegetable garden by forming terraces on the south-facing steep slope in front of her home of 32 years. The garden is an example of how to manage your landscape for diverse terrain. Over the past 20-plus years, Vicky has brought in by hand more than 500 concrete blocks to create paths between the terraced slopes where her vegetables grow.

Directions — 13771 Front Road.  From the George Parks Highway turn east on Willow-Fishhook Road, continue 9.8 miles. Watch for a small fire station on left. Front Road will be the next left turn.

Carol Goltz’s WillowAK Pottery is a personal studio where functional "pottery with personality" is created and displayed in a lovely crafts shop in a beautiful lakeside setting. Ornaments from garden to Christmas, plus many more exquisite pottery pieces available for sale. Carol’s husband Keith maintains an impeccable lawn and garden.
